Day 1. Tirana to Valbona Valley – Gateway to the Accursed Mountains

Our journey begins early in the morning, with a meeting point in either Tirana or Shkodra. We head toward the Albanian Alps, following an old road that leads to one of the region’s largest hydropower dams—built in the 1980s. The vast lake formed by this dam, often called the “fjord of Southern Europe,” captivates travelers with its dramatic mountain scenery.
A short transfer brings us to the village of Sale, where we begin a scenic walk along the Valbona River. Surrounded by beech forests, this tranquil hike lasts about 2.5 hours. We’ll conclude the day at a welcoming Guest House, hosted by local families, where we’ll settle in for the night.

Today marks the crown jewel of our trek: the legendary Valbona–Theth pass, a historic trail traveled by mountaineers for centuries. At 1860 meters above sea level, the pass reveals astonishing views over two of the Balkans' most breathtaking valleys—Valbona and Theth. It’s a truly majestic connection between alpine landscapes.
The descent into Theth leads us through a pristine beech forest, considered one of Albania’s most enchanting. Along the way, we’ll pause at rest stations built for the many hikers who pass through this area. The refreshing waters of the Theth River—fed by glacial springs—offer a chance to cool off. Meanwhile, our luggage will be transported by mule directly to our guesthouse

We’ll explore the traditional Albanian Code of Honor and the historical practices surrounding blood feuds and conflict resolution.
Next, we walk about 40 minutes to reach the Grunas Waterfall, a dramatic 25-meter cascade nestled within Theth National Park. From here, we continue toward the village of Nderlysaj, crossing a deep river flanked by towering peaks.
